TDZ: An Efficacious Plant Growth Regulator

Abstract TDZ(N_ henyl_N. _1, 2, 3_thidiazol_5_yl_urea) is a substituted henylurea com ound and
has emerged as a highly efficacious bioregulant of mor hogenesis in the tissue culture of many lant
s ecies. A lication of TDZ induces a diverse array of cultural res onses ranging from induction of
callus to formation of somatic embryos. TDZ exhibits the unique ro erty of mimicking both auxin
and cytokinin effects on growth and differentiation of cultured ex lants. The recent a roaches a -
lied to study the mor hogenic events initiated by TDZ are clearly beginning to reveal the details of
a variety of underlying mechanisms. Various re orts indicate that TDZ may act through modulation of
the endogenous lant growth substances, or as a result of induced stress. The other ossibilities in-
clude the modification in cell membranes, energy levels, nutrient u take, or nutrient assimilation.
In this review, several of these ossibilities are resented and summarized in light of recently ub-
lished studies on characterization of TDZ_induced mor hogenic effects.
