As Byrne (1979:1) comments, writing is “a sequence of sentences arranged in a particular order and linked together in certain ways.” It involves “the decoding of a message of some kind”. That is, by using a sequence of sentences we translate our thought into language. Reading, involves the “decoding or interpretation of the message”. The ability of writing doesnrsquo;t come spontaneously. We have to learn to write. The aim of Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) is to develop the studentsrsquo; communicative competence of using English. Itrsquo;s taken for granted that lsquo;teacher-centred must be transferred to lsquo;learner-centred and the learners must be given opportunity to practice what they learn. Finally they can achieve the goal of using English to communicate. And learning to write in a second language is one of the most difficult tasks for Chinese senior students. Therefore, having talked about the nature of writing, and the necessity to learn to write, the essay will try to explain the characteristics, the trend of the writing topics set in an English examination and then it will discuss how teachers can support and help the students to develop their writing skills. Body 一、 Features of recent writings in NMET in Jiangsu. Reflecting on recent writings in NMET in Jiangsu, we can see most of them are about practical writings like a letter. Since writing a letter is not to be tested in our examination, the writings are more intended to test the studentsrsquo; ability in writing argumentative essays. That is to say, students are supposed to express their opinions about a matter — argument, explain them or give related examples —grounds of argument, and draw their own conclusions.
