Unit 2 Descriptive Writing Learning Aims and Objectives On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to: Describe a person, an object, an event or a place in an original and unique way so that it appeals to the five senses: touch, taste, sound, sight and smell; Use specific words and modifiers to make details vivid and specific; Increase coherence by using adverbials of place and transitional words or expressions; Understand the use of showing- not- telling diction and figures of speech; Read and discuss descriptions of objects or events; Comprehend the details of a description, including the sounds, smells, sights, and feelings associated with a person or place; Observe the conventions of descriptive writing. Assignment Activity 1: Read the passage in the text aloud and identify the descriptive words. I. Lead-in Activities TEACHER STUDENTS Hand out the literature selection and read it aloud. Follow along and circle any descriptive words and phrases. Divide students into groups and direct each group to find descriptive words or phrases from the literature selection. Make lists of descriptive words or phases from the literature selection. Direct discussion of descriptive details using examples from the students’ lists. Substitute other descriptive words in the literature selection. Together, students and teacher decide which details are effective and why they work in the passage under discussion.
