PAGE PAGE IV Abstract With the development of economic globalization, tourism industry in China is confronted with the unprecedented opportunities and challenges and has become a new economic growing point in the new century. There is a great demand for qualified tourist employees who are proficient in both Tourism Management and English. Tourism English teaching therefore has been concerned and becomes an indispensable part of foreign language teaching. However, traditional PPP Approach which can be divided into three phases — Presentation, Practice and Production is still the dominant English teaching method adopted by many English teachers in higher vocational colleges. In terms of its function and adaptability, this approach is not suitable and effective enough to motivate students’ learning interests and enhance their practical English application competence. As one of the branches of ESP (English for Specific Purposes), Tourism English teaching is an English curriculum which attaches more importance to training students’ English communicative ability in specific tourist working environments. The characteristic of this curriculum requires the teaching content should be more practical and well-targeted to train qualified tourist professionals who can not only master Tourism English and knowledge of Tourism Management but also can apply them correctly in practical tourist environments, so, English teachers must focus on students’ developing of Tourism English communicative ability in the teaching procedures. Under the guidance of the theories of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and by emphasizing the characteristic of TBLT which focuses on cultivating students’ communicative and applied competence in language using, this thesis is devoted to testify the effectiveness of TBLT in Tourism English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
