Drilling Measurements Shock and Vibration (Prepared to support the Engineer in the field with the client) Introduction Shocks / Vibration: damage our tools and deteriorate the quality of our service. MWD/LWD Tools: include sensors to detect these shocks and the MWD can transmit them to the surface to warn the engineer of problems experienced by the tools in the hole that could affect the quality of our service. Objective: This presentation intends to illustrate how the shocks and vibration can affect the BHA and how we can mitigate it. This way we are able to protect our tools and improve the drilling process as well. Definition Shock It is the energy generated with the impact of Bit and BHA in the borehole. Vibration It is the answer of Bit / BHA with the shocks. Shock concepts can be visualized by attributing properties such as: - Magnitude - Duration - Frequency What is Shock? Magnitude: This is the deceleration which the tool undergoes as it impacts the Borehole. (G’s). Duration: This is the duration of the shock event, it is an under used measurement. Frequency: This is the quantity of times that the tool is experiencing a Shock greater than its Threshold. You know this as CPS (Counts Per Second). What can the MWD measure? Magnitude of the Shock (G) Frequency of the Shocks (CPS – Counts per seconds) Shock Risk Levels What is 50g? 50 x force of gravity (9.81 m/s2) Imagine travelling at 1765 km/hr (1096 miles/hour) Now come to a dead stop That is 50g the human body can only survive 20-35 g (if applied for a short period of time!) Shocks Sensors on PowerPulse/Telescope Dynamic Motions There are many types of Shock that can be generated downhole, and we need to be aware of them all: Torsional Vibration Torsional Vibration = fluctuation in the torque exhibited by the tool This motion causes a winding effect in the drill string, which causes fatigue mainly at the connections and on in
