铃木钢琴教学法与传统钢琴教学法的比较与思考 Introduction Piano playing is a phenomenal art that requires much dedication and practice to attain professional proficiency. Elsewhere in the world, people use various teaching methods to learn a piano, but there are two broad categories, namely the Suzuki piano teaching approach and the traditional piano teaching approach. While the Suzuki approach focuses on character, ethics, and paving the way for a child to learn joyfully, the traditional approach relies more on technical competence and perfection. This essay compares and reflects on the Suzuki piano teaching approach and the traditional piano teaching approach. Suzuki Piano Teaching Approach The Suzuki piano teaching approach is a globally recognized learning method that emphasizes character development in a child. The approach is premised on the belief that children can learn to play the piano from an early age as they can learn to speak. Therefore, children as young as 3 or 4 years old are taught in group classes with other children of the same age and skill. The primary objective is to promote a lifelong love for music and instill good moral standards in the child. Children learn piano pieces by imitation, listening, and then playing. The Suzuki approachs unique aspect is that it emphasizes the emotional contribution to learning by fostering the discipline of listening to music and fostering a sensitive ear. More so, the Suzuki approach builds foundational musical skills on repetition, slow and gradual learning, and positive reinforcement. A tenet of the Suzuki approach is that criticism is discouraged but deemphasized, replaced with positive reinforcement gestures such as encouragement, praise, and affection. Also, in this approach, group teachings engage children in building confidence, social interaction, cooperation, responsibility, and teamwork.
