The disease can cause significant physical and emotional distress, leading to a decrease in the patients quality of life. As a result, understanding the factors that contribute to a patients survival and quality of life is crucial in treating cancer effectively. This paper reviews research on cancer patient survival and quality of life, including ways to improve the care of cancer patients. Literature Review Several studies have examined the factors that contribute to cancer patient survival and quality of life. One study found that cancer patients with social support and higher education levels had better quality of life than those without social support and lower education levels (Mandrelle et al., 2019). Another study indicated that depression and anxiety have a negative impact on the quality of life of cancer patients (Zalcman et al., 2017). Moreover, inadequate treatment and diagnosis delays were also linked to lower quality of life among cancer patients. In terms of treatment, chemotherapy can improve survival rates in various cancers, but it can also have negative effects on a patients quality of life. If the treatment causes unpleasant side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and hair loss, the patients quality of life could decrease significantly (Hui et al., 2017). Similarly, radiation therapy can improve survival rates, but the patient’s quality of life may also be negatively affected due to its side effects (Kurzrock et al., 2020). Several strategies have been proposed to improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Exercise and physical activity have been shown to have a positive effect on cancer patients, with studies demonstrating that exercise can lower the risk of cancer recurrence and improve the patient’s quality of life (Mayne et al., 2020).
