Chapter One IntroductionResearch backgroundComputerhasbeenusedforlanguageteachingeversincethe1960s.Sincethe initialintroductionofcomputersintothefieldofsecond/foreignlanguageeducation,a largenumberofpractitionershaveconcurredthatthistechnologyholdsgreatpotential forlanguagelearning(Levy,1997;Pennington,1996).Thisbeliefleadstowhatis knownasComputer-AssistedLanguageLearning,morecommonlyreferredtoasCALL, whichofferspromisingpossibilitiesforbothlanguagelearningandresearchinto language acquisition.AccordingtoChapelle(2001),thedevelopmentofCALLinits40-yearperiodcan bedividedintothreemainstages:behavioristCALL,communicativeCALL,and integrativeCALL.Eachstagecorrespondstoacertainleveloftechnologyandcertain pedagogicaltheories.Ascomputertechnologydeveloped,themodern-representative integrativeCALLevolvesoutofvariouslimitationsofbehavioristCALLand communicativeCALL,andtakesasocio-cognitiveviewthatemphasizesreallanguage useinameaningfulandauthenticcontext.Itseeksbothtointegratethevariousskillsof languagelearningandtointegratetechnologymorefullyintolanguageteaching.Tothis end,themultimedia-networkedcomputerprovidesarangeofinformational, communicative, and publishing tools that are potentially available to every student.In recent years, second language (L21) vocabulary acquisition has been anincreasinglyinterestingtopicofdiscussionforresearchers,teachers,curriculum designers,theoristsorothersinvolvedinL2learning,forthefactthatvocabularyis centraltolanguage,andespeciallyimportantforL2languagelearners.Thecentralityof vocabularytolanguageacquisitionanduseisexpressedinthefollowingquotationby Hatch (1983, p, 74):…itisthelexicallevelthatadultL2learnersclaimismostimportant.Whenour firstgoaliscommunication,whenwehavelittleviewofthelanguageatourcommand, it is the lexicon that is crucial…The words…will make basic communication possible.Sincevocabularyacquisitionisofparamountimportanceineducationdomain,ithas alwaysattractedattentioninsecondlanguagepedagogyandresearch,buthowlearners acquirevo
