7B, Page 8, Why does it rain? Rain is part of a very important cycle in the world, the water cycle. It all starts when the sun shines on the water in the earth, the rivers, the lakes, and the seas. The water then evaporates and rises with the warm air. The water vapour cools off as it ascends, and becomes clouds if it’s cold high up in the sky. The clouds are always on the move. They merge into large dark clouds when the cold clouds collide with the warm ones. Tiny drops of water “live” in the dark clouds, “eat” moisture around them and “grow up”. When they become so heavy that the clouds can no longer support them, they fall down to ground as rain. (If it’s very cold, raindrops almost freeze as they fall from the clouds. It is known as sleet. If the temperature keeps declining further, rain freezes even before they descend and fall on your shoulder as snowflakes. It is known as snow.)
