Abstract Wind power is one of the most promising areas in renewable energy. Small wind power system is an important way to solve problem of electricity supply for those who live in remote and isolated areas. Both wind energy and load have the properties of randomness and uncertainty, so some difficulties of small wind power system control are brought about. The integrated control strategy which consists of maximum power tracking control，load tracking control and battery charging and discharging control is investigated in this paper to make the small wind power generation systems to operate in both optimal and reliable conditions. Firstly, the background and significance of research work are introduced, a comprehensive summary of current situation of domestic and foreign wind power generation is given, and the development of wind power technology is summarized. The basic structure of the stand-alone small scale wind power generation systems as well as the operation principle of each part of systems is discussed, and analysis of the operation of wind turbine characteristics and the principle of using DC / DC converter to achieve system output power adjustment are emphasized on. Secondly, the small-scale wind power generation system is considered as a whole on the basis of the structure of supporting integrated control strategy, and the system working modes and their transition are obtained by the analysis of energy flow inside the system. As a result, the integrated control strategy which consists of maximum power tracking control，load tracking control and battery charging and discharging control is given. Finally, the structure and parameters of main circuit as well as peripheral circuit for control system are designed in detail, and hardware circuit of the system is set up by selecting C8051F410 single chip as the control unit, and using the Hall elements to detect measured currents and voltages.
