In the above, Lin Ma illustrated the metaphors Obama used in his two victorious speeches. And now, I’d like to say something about the enlightenment that metaphors could bring to English teaching practice. Through Lin Ma’s analysis, we know that metaphors abound in both Chinese and English like 鐵石心腸,snow-white etc. However, a large number of English learners still have difficulty memorizing words, distinguishing phrases, writing compositions and speaking correctly and authentically. In fact, metaphors contributes partly to it, in other words, metaphors can help to solve such problems to some extent. Chinese is different from English in terms of thinking patterns and so on. Chinese people tend to use words that they can directly sense through organs like eyes, noses, etc, to describe things, while native English speakers tend to describe things from their nature. For instance, we call this ― 紅綠燈‖ ,apparently from the perspective of colors. Then, let ’s take a look at what it is in English, it is called ―traffic light‖, it is get depicted in terms of its function. The distinction in thinking between the two languages also exists metaphorically. So it is of prime importance to grasp metaphors before truly learning English well.
