Productive skills include speaking and writing that students use to produce the language to communicate with others. In order to teach productive skills successfully, stimulus, purpose and feedback should be taken into consideration. Stimuli and purpose for Speaking The main goal of teaching speaking is to achieve oral fluency which means students can express themselves with less grammatical errors and hesitation. In order to achieve the goal, teachers should provide both accuracy-based activities and fluency-based activities for students. the purpose of accuracy-based activities is to help students to practice error-free language. In this case,drills are considered as very effective stimulus:the typical drills are repetition drills, transformation drills and substitution drills.The drawback is the drills may be too boring to keep students motivated, we can use some simple stories as material to make it interesting. The purpose of fluency-based activities is to provide more opportunities for students to use the authentic language by interacting and communicating with each other.The effective stimulus are those interactive activities,the most important one is information gap activities. Feedback for speaking Giving feedback for the speaking activities is a very important part. For the accuracy-based activities,teachers should give feedback immediately.Teachers could nod, smile or say “well done” to give positive feedback when students perform well. When students make mistakes, teachers could show incorrectness by repeating, echoing and hinting to help students to correct mistakes by themselves. The advantage is to ensure students use the correct form for the rest part of activity.The disadvantage is making students feel embarrassed and demotivated. However,In order to keep the flow of the communication,feedback for fluency-based activities is always delayed.
