* The characteristic epidemiological features of influenza include the occurrence of frequently, but unpredictable epidemics and periodic worldwide pandemics. Pandemics occur less frequently, than epidemic however four have been recorded in the last century. Although a pandemic is responsible for higher morbidity and mortality than an epidemic because it infects a larger part of the population (70%), the interpandemic burden of influenza deaths and severe illness is cumulatively greater than that of pandemics. Since the influenza virus was first isolated in 1933, the H1N1 subtype, major antigenic shifts have occurred in 1957 (H2N2 - Asian flu), 1968 (H3N2 - Hongkong flu) and 1977 (H1N1 reappeared). Recently in 1997, the first H5N1 subtype was isolated from humans - H5 only having previously infected birds. By the end of 1997, there had been 4 deaths among the 15 cases identifies with the new strain.
