AbstractVerbalhumorisalinguisticphenomenoninsociallifeanditisthecrystalofhuman’swisdom.Theresearchesonitmainlyexistinthefieldsoflinguistics,physiology,psychology,philosophy,aestheticsandsociology.Theearlierresearchersproposethreefamoustraditionalviewpoints:viewofSuperiority,viewofReliefandthatofIncongruity.Focusingonspeakers,thethreeviewpointsanalyzetheoccurringprocedureofverbalhumor.Modernlinguistshavecarriedoutfurtherresearchesonhumorfromcognitivesemantics,socialpragmaticsandfunctionallinguistics,whichhavemadegreatcontributiontothestudiesonhumor.RaskinproposesSemanticScriptTheoryofHumor,whichindicatesscriptshiftmechanismtoanalyzesemantic-pragmaticprocesscontainedinhumor.NowadaysmanyresearchersathomehavestudiedtheproducingandunderstandingprocessofhumorwhichareexplainedbyviolatingCooperationPrinciples,orinvestigatedfromtheSpeechActTheory,ormadeuseoftheRelevanceTheory.Thisresearchproposesthattheproducingandunderstandingofverbalhumorrelyoncontexts,andthepragmaticfunctionofverbalhumoroccurswithincontexts.CombinedwithexamplesfromthefamousAmericanmagazineReader’sDigest,theresearchanalyzesverbalhumor’sthreefoldcontextbasedonpragmatics,interpretstheeffectofthreecontextsonproducingandunderstandingverbalhumor,anddemonstratesverbalhumor’spragmaticfunctions.Verbalhumor’sthreefoldcontextinvolveslinguisticcontext,situationalcontextandculturalcontext.Linguisticcontextreferstotheco-textofverbalhumor,includingelementsaspronunciation,wordmeaning,sentencestructure,andsoon.Situationalcontextreferstothetime,place,theparticipatorsandtheirrelationship,andthenatureoftheevent,whicharecontainedintheverbalhumor.Culturalcontextrelatesthehistoricalandculturalbackgroundthetextmeetswith,containingelementsasthesocialcustoms,conventions,values,culture,andsoon.Combinedwithdiscourseanalysis,thisresearchfindsthat：1)Verbalhumorhasspecialconstructionrules,especiallyitsthreefoldcontextwhichinterweavestogetherandinteractswell.2)Peopleuseverbalhumorwithclearaims,anditpartlydependsonspeaker’slanguagelevel,
