Suchmentalcoherenceisessentialfortheinterpretationofadiscourse.Iconicityfallsintothreetypes:imagiciconicity,diagrammaticiconicity,andmetaphoricaliconicity.Imagiciconicitymakesthediscoursecoherentfromoraliconicityandvisualiconicity.Diagrammaticiconicityachievesthediscoursecoherentthroughfourtypesoficonicity:sequenceiconicity,distanceiconicity,quantityiconicity,andmarkednessiconicity.Metaphoriconicityplaysanimportantroleinthediscoursecoherenceatadeeperlevel.Coherenceinmentaldiscourseisachievedthroughcognitiveworldthatconnectsthelinguisticformsandtherealworld,andhelpsconstructadynamicrelationbetweenthemandtheprocessingactivitiesinminds.Theuniversalcognitiveworldinfluencescoherenceinmentaldiscourseandisessentialtounderstandandproduceadiscourse.Cognitiveworldworkswellfordiscoursecoherencebyfillinginthemissinginformationinadiscourse,interpretingdeterminingpronouns,andSloppyUse“the+NominalPart（NP）”.Itcansuccessfullyconnecttheelementsinthediscoursewiththecognitivebackgroundinminds.Ithelpsushaveadeeperinterpretationofdiscourseanalysisinadynamicway.Sometimesitisnotenoughtointerpretthecoherenceofthediscourseonlyconsideringtheinternalelementsofadiscourseitself,becauselanguageisshapedbyinteractiveembodimentandcognitiveprocessing.Inexperiencetheworld,humanactivitiesarebrandedwithcultureprofoundly.Generallyspeaking,differentlanguageisiconictodifferentcultureandaffectsthedegreeoficonicitybetweenlanguageandreality.Anddifferentculturalbackgroundaffectshumancognitivestyleandcognitiveworld.Therefore,duringthestudyofdiscoursecoherence,theculturalfactorsneedtobeintegratedintoconsideration.Onthebasisoftheoryanalysisandillustrationwithspecificandtypicalexamples,theauthorfindssomeimplicationstotheteachingofcollegeEnglishwriting.TheteachingofcollegeEnglishwritingshouldpayattentiontostudents’embodiment,havingthemexperiencethesimilaritiesanddifferencesofwritingbetweenChineseandEnglishandadjustingtheircognitiveworld.TeachingcollegeEnglishwritingcanadoptaprocess-genreapproach.Anditisdividedintos
