QianJingjing:ACognitiveApproachtoMetaphor’sRoleinInterculturalCommunicationiAcknowledgementsManypeoplehavecontributedtremendouslytothisstudy.Firstly,Iamindebtedtomysupervisor,ProfessorFangWenli,forhisskill,energy,patience,and,particularly,forhismeticulousreadingofthedraftsofthisthesisandhisvaluablesupportandreviewsuggestionsduringthedevelopmentofthisstudy.Withouthisincessantsupportandencouragement,constructiveinstructionsandpatientguidanceatallstagesofthework,thepresentstudywouldneverhavebeenwritten.AnenormousdebtisalsoowedtoProfessorYuHongliang,ProfessorSunShengmao,ProfessorQinXu,ProfessorZhouWeijie,ProfessorZhuJianxun,ProfessorYuJianhua,fromwhosevaluablelecturesIbenefitedalotandbroadenedmylinguisticknowledgeaswell.SincerethanksgotoalltheotherprofessorsandteachersintheSchoolofForeignLanguages,whosenameswillnotbementionedbutrememberedbymeforeverfortheirsincerehelpinmystudy.Finally,Iforwardmyappreciationtomyparentsandmyclassmatesfortheirlove,careandsupporttheyhavebeengivingmeinthepastthreeyears.ChapterOneIntroductionGeneralDescriptionoftheStudyThisstudy,throughexaminingthemostrepresentativeworksfromclassicChineseandEnglishRomanticpoems,intendstoexploremetaphor’suniversalcognitivefunctionanditsinterculturalvalues.Theobjectivesofthestudyareasfollows:(a)whatthemosttypicalmetaphoricalexpressionsareinChineseandEnglishpoeticdiscourses,(b)ifthereareanysimilaritiesbetweenthetwolanguagesrealizedbymetaphoricalexpressionsandinwhatwaytheyaresimilar,and(c)usingcognitiveapproachtoexplicatethesesimilaritiestouncovertheuniversallysharedexperientialbasestoconveymetaphor’simportantroleininterculturalcommunication.Therefore,thefollowingresearchquestionsaredeveloped:1）WhatarethebasictypesofmetaphoricalexpressionsinChineseRomanticpoems?2）WhatarethebasictypesofmetaphoricalexpressionsinEnglishRomanticpoems?3）Arethereanysimilaritiesoftheconceptualpatternsofmetaphoricalexpressionsbetweenthetwolanguages?Ifso,towhatextentaretheysimilartoeachotherandwhatimplicationsmightbedrawnfromit?Contentana
