strategiesmatchthepsychologicalexpectationsofoneanother;(3)theinfluenceof thefactorsontheteachers’choicesofstrategiessuchasthegenderoftheteachers,the genderofthestudentsandthetypeofissuesinvolvedinthedisagreement.Themajor findings of the study are as follows:Duringthetests,boththeteachersandthestudentstendtoexpress disagreement in relatively indirect ways.Although some of the teachers actually adopt fairlydirectstrategiestoconveytheirdisagreementwiththepurposeofbetter efficiencyinclass,mostoftheteacherssurveyedinthestudytakeintoconsideration thefeelingsofthestudents.Thestudents,ontheotherhand,aredeeplyinfluencedby thetraditionalvalueofrespectingtheteachersandtheauthoritativerolethatthe teachershavebeenplayingatalltime.Theyexpresstheirdisagreementwithindirect strategiesinmostofthetime.Onlyafewstudentssaythattheywillshowtheir disagreementinrelativelydirectways,whichindicatesthechangeofteacher-student relation in modern education.Theresultsofthecomparisonsbetweenthestrategiesusedinexpressing disagreementandthepsychologicalexpectationsshowthatneithertheteachersnor thestudentsdowellenoughtochoosethestrategiesthatsatisfytheexpectationsof oneanother.Thisisindicativeofthelackofcommunicationbetweentheteachersand the students.Thethesisalsoinvestigatestheinfluenceoftheteachers’andthestudents’ genderandthetypeofissuesinvolvedinthedisagreementontheteachers’’choicesof strategies.Theresultsshowthatthegender,asavariable,doesnothaveanimpacton thechoicesofstrategies.Asfarastheissuesinvolvedinthedisagreementare concerned,whiletheydonotinfluencethestudents’choicesofstrategies,they remarkablyinfluencetheteachers’choices.Theteacherswilladjusttheirstrategiesof performingthespeechactofdisagreementindifferentsituationsdespitethefactthat thestrategiestheyusedonotalwayssatisfythepsychologicalexpectationsofthe students.Keywords:Englishclassrooms;disagreement;speechact;strategies;psychological expectationsList ofTablesTables:Table3.1Classificationonthedifferentissuesofdisagreement…………………….15 Ta
