ABSTRACTTheActivatedSludgeModelNo.3(ASM3)wasproposedbyInternationalWaterAssociation(IWA)basedontheActivatedSludgeModelNo.1(ASM1)andNo.2 (ASM2).ItrelatestoASM1andcorrectsforsomedefectsofASM1.InASM3organicnitrogenisregardedasapartoforganicmaterialandstorageofsolubleorganicsubstratesisaddedasanintermediate.m.Thelysisprocessisexchangedforanendogenousrespirationprocess,whichmakesitmoreapproachtherealbiologicalprocess.Moreover,ASM3introductsthecompositionmatrixlk,itogetherwiththestoichiometricmatrixvj,i.Inthispaper,amathematicalmodelforactivatedsludgesystemwasconstructedbasedonASM3andTakacssettlingmodel,withthetransferprocessmodel.Inordertosolvethedifferentialequationsinthemodel,acomputerprogramforthecominationof ASM3andsecondsettlingtankmodelhasbeendevelopedonthebasisofMatlab7.1, whichisakindofcomputerlanguagemainlyusedinengineeringcalculation.Also anothercomputerprogramhasbeendevelopedforanalyzingthesensitivityoftheprincipaleffluenttargets,includingCOD,TNandNH3-N,Theresultshowedthatonlyalimitednumberofmodelparametersinfluencedthemodeloutputwaterqualitysignificantly.MostparametershavenoorabitinfluenceonCODoutput,afew parametershavebiginfluenceonTNandNH3-N.Accordingtotheresultofsensitivityanalysisfor8th monthand10th monthafterrunningthemodelingprogramwiththedefaultparametersrecommendedbyIWA, ASM3provedwellcapableofdescribingtheoperationstateoftheWWTPwithadjustmentofonlyonedefaultparameters,namely,autotrophicbacteriaproductivecoefficientfrom1.0g(COD)/g(COD)to0.925g(COD)/g(COD)for8thmonthandfrom1.0g(COD)/g(COD)to0.712g(COD)/g(COD)for10thmonth.themodelingresultsandthesimulatingresultsexpressedthatthereisagoodagreementbetweenthemodelingvaluesandthepracticalmeasurementsforCODandTNandNH3-N.Therelativelyerrorisbelow0.05%,0.55%,0.56%for8thmonthand0.03%,0.17%,0.32%for10thmonth.Inordertopredicttheeffluentqualityunderdifferentconditions,suchasinfluentvolume,SRT,externalrefluxratioandvolumeratiobetweendenitrifyingzoneandnitratingzone,steadysimulationsanddynamicsimulationsfortheoperat
