Selecting a HMI interface for PLC based automation system that will meet the needs of the process over the projected life time of control system requires consideration of many issues. This paper describes soft and hard issues concerning the selection and design of Human Machine Interface for PLC based Automation System. The designed strategy proposed here can be streamlined to avoid excessive paperwork. Keywords: Human Machine Interface(HMI), Programmable Logic Controller(PLC), Automation. 1. INTRODUCTION Selecting the HMI for a PLC based automation system is an experience for the plant engineer. The selection procedure consists of two components. First is the evaluation of technical issues like performance characteristic, specifications, cost, modular design, data handling techniques, communication network concepts, open architecture and software that will allow taking the system on a “test drive” (Leroy Cockrell, Thomas M. Sander, 1992). Some of the poignant issues are flexible like personal opinion, personal prejudices and judgement of the people involved in the process. It is important for the designer to keep the above issues separate and deal with each appropriate to benefit from the evaluation process.
