Abstrac:tLocalinvariantfeaturesarereceivingincreasingattentionfrom computervisionresearchcommunity. Local
invariantfeatureshavebeenwidelyutilizedinalargenumberofapplication,s e.g., widebaselinematching, object
recognition, andcategorization, miageretrieva,lvisualsearch, robotlocalization, sceneclassification, texturerecognition
anddatamining.Thispapergivesanoverviewofthevariousapproachesandpropertiesoflocalinvariantfeatures.W efocus
onthreemajorareas: 1)localinvariantfeaturedetector,s 2 )localinvariantfeaturedescriptor,sand 3)localinvariant
featurematching.Mostoftheexistinglocalinvariantfeaturedetectorscanbecategorizedintocornerdetector,s blob
detectorsorregiondetector.s Localdescriptorscanbecategorizedintodistribution-based, filter-based, moment-based
descriptorsandothersdescriptors. Smiilaritymeasuremen,tmatchingstrategyandmatchingverificationarethreekey
componentsofrobustmatchingalgorithm.sFinally, someresearchchallengesandfuturedirectionsarediscussed.
