To a large extent, this interest in genre analysis has been motivated by the need to provide satisfactory models and descriptions of academic and scientific texts, which is helpful to enhance the ability of non-native speaker students to understand the literature in their study fields as well as to produce their own works. Among the three schools in contemporary genre studies, i.e. ESP Genre Analysis, North American New Rhetoric Studies and Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics, ESP Genre Analysis mainly focuses on academic writing, i.e. research articles (RA) (Hyon, 1996). So far, one branch of the previous research that adapted the ESP Genre Analysis approach, has concentrated on grammatical and stylistic aspects of written academic discourse, such as the use of tense and aspect (Burrough-Boenisch, 2003; Hinkel, 2004), modality (Vassileva, 2001), the use and function of adje
