Abstract The literary Image Theory holds that the nature of literature lies in images whose content and essence are people’s lives. Literary images which have not only their hirachical structures but also complicated outer combination are complex systems. They are not static, but are movable, which is especially obvious in those image systems composed by the same kind of images in different works. The course of evolution of images’ generation, development, variation and obscurity, and the occurrence of any one link of this chain all have complicated reasons. Of course, the noticeable literary phenomena, the variation and development of images (image systems), are connected closely with people’s daily life, literary theories and literary trends of thought. Because we believe that the essence of literature lies in images and prefer American literature, we pay much attention to those literary images and find there is an enormous and special image combination——new Adam image system in the 19th and 20th century in American literature. This new Adam image system , we observe, experienced a evolution course from generation, variation to obscurity, and the analysis of each link of this chain and the clarity of the whole course will make us understand more correctly, lively and completely the relationship between literature and reality and also the American literature’s characters and development. Generally, on the basis of the literary image theory this thesis lays emphasis on the analysis and interpretation of the reasons and manifestation of the new Adam image system’s evolution and obscurity. There are five parts in this thesiss main body. Firstly, it points out
