西方人称fish为白肉，flesh为红肉（即牛羊等肉）。传统上认为fish比flesh低等。很多西方人讨厌鱼腥味，不喜欢吃鱼。有骨头的鱼他们就更没有可能会吃的。很多欧洲民族认为fish不属于meat。 所以，make fish of one and flesh of another的意思就是：给这位吃鱼却给那位吃肉。意思就是双重标准，厚此薄彼了。（ To jump就是：跳；to jump right out of ones skin要是直译的话,就是某人从皮肤里跳出来。这当然是不可能发生的，所以你永远也不可能看到这种现象。实际上，to jump right out of ones skin是指一个人由于突然发生的事，或者是由于没有预料到的危险，使他吓一跳。同样的，要是突然发生一件令人非常高兴的事，使某人非常惊喜，在这种场合下也能用这个常用语。 (2) I was practically on my knees but he still refused. 译文:我几乎是苦苦哀求,但他依然拒绝.
