214 BiomedEnvironSci，2011；24(3)：214—221 OriginalArticle CharacterizationofHand，Foot，andMouthDiseaseinChinabetween2008and 2009 ZHANGJing#SUNJunLing，CHANG ZhaoRui，ZAH NG W eiDong，WANG ZiJun，andFENGZiJian ， DiseaseControlandEmergencyResponseOffice,ChineseCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention，Beijing 10220~China Abstract 0bjective ToinvestigatetheepidemiologicalandclinicaIfeaturesofhand．footandmouthdisease (HFMD)sinceseveraloutbreaksofHFMDcausedbyenteroviruseswere documented inChina between2007and2008． Methods HFMD casesreported to theNationalInfectiousDisease lnformati0nManagement System databasebetweenMay2008andApril2009wereassessed．Clinicalfeaturesinsomeofthe severeandfatalcaseswereanalyzedtheetiologyoftheoutbreakswasinvestigated． Results 89．1％ ofreportedHFMD caseswerefound inchildren5yearoldwithanage．specific incidencerateof834．1／100000inthefirstyearasthenotifiablediseaseinChinafromMay2008 toApril2009．The incidence，mortality andpercentageofsevere caseswerestudiedforthree regionsofChinaandfoundtobehighestinthecentralregion．Theincidenceofseverecasesand mortalityinruralpopulationweresignificantlyhigherthanthoseinurbanpopulation．Amongthe laboratoryconfirmedEV17positivecasestherewere52．6％ miId，83．5％ severe，and96．1％ fatal cases．Moremyoclonic ierkswere found in the severe case group than ln group thatdied． Tachypnea，lippurpling，pinkfoamingandlow Iimbtemperatureoccurredmorefrequentlyinthe fataIcasesthanintheseverecases． Conclusion TheepidemicofHFMD inChinawascharacterizedpredominantlybyEV71infections．had relativelyhighmortalityratesespeciallyinthecentralregion，andwasmostprevalentinyoung，rural populations． Keywords：Hand，foot，andmouthdisease；Enterovirus；Epidemiology；Clinicalfeatures
