Inmetalforming,thegeometryoftheworkpieceisestablishedentirelyorpartiallybythe
geometryofthedie.Incontrasttomachiningprocesses,ignificantlygreaterforcesare
necessaryinforming.Duetothecomplexityoftheparts,formingisoftennotcarriedoutina
singleoperation.Dependingonthegeometryofthepart,productioniscarriedoutinseveral
operationalstepsviaoneorseveralproductionprocessessuchasformingorblanking.One
operationcanalsoincludeseveralprocessessimultaneously(cf.Sect.2.1.4).
Duringthedesignphase,thenecessarymanufacturingmethodsaswellasthesequenceand
numberofproductionstepsareestablishedinaprocessingplan(Fig.4.1.1).Inthisplan,the
availabilityofmachines,theplannedproductionvolumesofthepartandotherboundary
conditionsaretakenintoaccount.
Theaimistominimizethenumberofdiestobeusedwhilekeepingupahighlevelof
operationalreliability.Thepartsaregreatlysimplifiedrightfromtheirdesignstagebyclose
collaborationbetweenthePartDesignandProductionDepartmentsinordertoenableseveral
formingandrelatedblankingprocessestobecarriedoutinoneformingstation.
Obviously,themoreoperationswhichareintegratedintoasingledie,themorecomplexthe
structureofthediebecomes.Theconsequencesarehighercosts,adecreaseinoutputanda
lowerreliability.
