English teachers are also quite familiar to such statements as “ I just know I have some kind of disability: I can t lear n a foreig n Ian guage no matter how hard I try ”; “ Whe n I m in my English class I just freeze! I can t think of a thing when my teacher calls on me. My mind goes blank ” . Manypeople claim to have a mental block against learning a foreig n Ian guage, though they may be good lear ners in other situati ons. Early in the 1940s and 1950s, teachers and researchers in Europe and America bega n to attach great importa nee to an xiety and it became focus of the research and practice of educati onal psychology. Some perspectives have bee n in vestigated in a nu mber of differe nt areas: State An xiety or Trait An xiety, Debilitat ing An xiety and Facilitati ng An xiety. Just as an xiety preve nts some people from perform ing successfully in scie nee or mathematics, many people find foreign Ianguage learning, especially in classroom situati ons, particularly stressful. Second or foreig n Ian guage researchers and theorists have long bee n aware that an xiety is ofte n associated with Ian guage lear ning. In China, quite a lot of teachers and researchers also attach great importanee to the effects of foreign Ianguage an xiety.
