The air around us, in this very room contains millions of particles of contaminants including - water, an average day is between 50 and 80% relative humidity - dust, at an average of approximately 4 million parts per cubic foot - bacteria micro-organisms in varying quantities - pollen, which varies with the seasons - hydrocarbon emissions, mainly from engine exhaust, and - industrial acids that we put into the air form our factories. Now take that already contaminated air and draw it into a compressed air system. Some people will say: “It’s OK, I have an compressor intake filter”. A standard compressor intake filter provides 2 micron filtration. (Higher quality intake filter, such as on Sullair compressors can do somewhat better.) But the intake filter is only a means of primary protection for the compressor, and unfortunately, approximately 80% of particles in the air are smaller than 2 microns. In fact most are much much smaller. Even with our conservative estimate of 4 million particles of dust per square foot, this only reduces it to 3.2 million particles per square foot. And once the air is compressed the situation gets much much worse… Now compress that air to 100 psig and watch what happens. - The water now goes up to 100% relative humidity and even condenses to a liquid. - Dust multiplies by 7.8 times to almost 25 million parts per cubic foot, - All the other contaminants are also 7.8 times more concentrated than before. In addition to the concentrating effects of compression, the very act of compressing the air adds even more contamination. The compressor and air system will add oil, rust particles, wear particles and pipe scale. The amount of each contaminant that it adds depends on the type of the system, (I.e. oil flooded vs. oil free compressor) as well as the condition of the system.
