Structuring a passage Introduces the main idea and provides context Para 1: Asking a question Draw the readers’ attention to the topic Do we organize our thoughts in different ways because of the culture we belong to? The idea of different cultural thought patterns was first put forward by an American professor of applied linguistics, Robert Kaplan, in the 1960s. Read passage in Reading across culture and find examples to match the function of each paragraph. Para 2: Kaplan’s cultural thought patterns Structuring a passage Provides examples to illustrate the main idea For example, whereas native speakers of English usually went straight to the point when writing an essay, other students did not.
