Optimized Design of Complicated Traffic Circle Based on Stimulation of Improved Methods Feb. 2008 Abstract On pursuit of more accuracy will sacrifice more complexity. In context of most models published are too accurate to solve the complicated problem. We designed novel improved stimulating schemes, considering large scale changeable moving velocity, which are suitable for the complicated situations. Four models of traffic circles were brought with two kinds of patterns including a relatively small 2-lane traffic circle with 4-lane approaches/exits and a large 3-lane traffic circle with six 4-lane approaches/exits. New traffic guiding rules and dynamic self-optimized traffic lights were brought in the designing. Average delay time (DAT) and average rate of coming vehicles () was defined as the criteria of measurement. Then the behaviors of those four models were compared with others by utilization of the - ADT Relationships. And some crucial parameters as coming velocity and size within each model were discussed in detail. As for the small 2-lane traffic circle, it is interesting that DAT is in direct proportion to , while the predominance of large size traffic circle is not as significant as predicted. As for the large 3-lane traffic circle, the model of our novel self-optimized traffic lights degenerate to the model of yield sign. 1 Introduction Traffic circle is common in many countries. It has some advantages over intersections, which have much more potential conflicts than the former one [1]. Traditionally, traffic entering a circle has the right-of-way, although some circles give right-of-way to the primary roads [2]. And the size of the traffic circle is typically based on land availability and road distance needed. For some big traffic circles in the big cities, like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, they often cause unacceptable traffic chaos with too many incoming vehicles [3-4].
