The design of structures, waterworks and other civil facilities remains the main thrust of civil engineering, but today the civil engineer must also address environmental issues and the economic analysis and management of the systems that he or she designs. Our goal at Johns Hopkins is to provide a strong program in the major areas of civil engineering. We recognize the heavy demands on the civil engineer who must master the mathematical, physical and chemical principles that support the design of a wide variety of projects, while developing a sensitivity to the economic and societal effects of those projects.
