On Cultural Differences and Blending between China and the West — A Contrastive Study of the Spring Festival and Christmas Abstract Festival, which reflects the most delicate and representative respect of culture, is the essence of human’s daily life. Festivals usually have deep historical cultural connotation and stand for peoples hope and expectation. The Spring Festival and Christmas are respectively important holiday in China and western countries, which can be described as the representatives of a culture and can be the typical example to explore the cultural differences between Chinese and western festivals. It is helpful for people to absorb the outstanding foreign cultures by exploring the differences, protect and promote the essence of cultural value. In the Western society where people worship Jesus Christ, Christmas is regarded as a grand holy festival. People gain spiritual peace and satisfaction in the ceremonies to celebrate the festival. The Spring Festival in China has similar functions. The difference is that the Spring Festival features a sense of family ethics. People pay homage to the ancestors, enjoy the reunion with family members and refresh their spirits in the family warmth. This paper compares the differences and similarities between Christmas and the Spring Festival, shows their origins and ways of celebration, points out that the two have something in common, that is, looking forward to well-being, longing for caring, and blessing the future.
