John Langshaw Austin Biographical Introduction John Langshaw Austin (March 26, 1911 - February 8, 1960) was one of the major British philosophers of language, who constructed the school of “ordinary language philosophy” with Gilbert Ryle, H. L. A. Hart, and Peter Strawson at Oxford in 1930s, sometimes the school called “Oxford Philosophy”. Ordinary language analysis largely flourished and developed at Oxford in the 1940s. In 1962, Urmson published Austin’s How to Do Things with Words《如何用语言做事》based on Austin’s William James lecture notes at Harvard University in 1955. In the same year, Warnock collected and published Austin’s another book Sense and Sensibilia 《感觉与可感觉的事物》based on Austin’s lecture notes about the study of perception at Oxford between 1947 and 1959. A speaker might be performing three acts simultaneously when speaking ① locutionary act: (言内行为) the act of uttering words, phrases, clausesIt is the act of conveying literal meaning by means of syntax, lexicon and phonology. ② Illocutionary act: (言外行为) the act of expressing the speaker’s intentionIt is the act preformed in saying something. ③ perlocutionary act: (言后行为) the act performed by or resulting from saying something (1961).
