Economic Efficiency and Regional Equality:
An Empirical Study of Growth and Disparities among Chinese Provinces (1978-2003)
Abstract: Applying two production frontier techniques to regional statistics, we decompose China’s
economic growth during the period 1978-2003 into components attributable to physical capital
accumulation, efficiency improvement, technological progress and human capital accumulation. We
analyze the influences of these components on regional disparities in the framework of beta absolute
convergence regression, finding that efficiency improvement among them is the only factor favorable
for the regional catch-up process. However, the convergence effects of efficiency improvement tend
to attenuate gradually over time. In addition, this study tries to enrich the recent debate on the
convergence of the total factor productivity (TFP).
