I. SUMMARY
This profile envisages the establishment of a plant for the assembly of treadle pumps with a capacity of 6000 units per annum.
The present demand for the proposed product is estimated at 7,954 units per annum. The demand is expected to reach at 14,998 units by the year 2020.
The plant will create employment opportunities for 25 persons.
The total investment requirement is estimated at about Birr 2.42 million, out of which Birr 427,800 is required for plant and machinery.
The project is financially viable with an internal rate of return (IRR) of 20 % and a net present value (NPV) of Birr 1.07 million discounted at 8.5%.
II. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION
The treadle pump is a foot operated single acting double cylinder piston pump. It is powered by someone stepping up and down on two treadles, which draws water from rivers and wells through one hose, pressurizing it, and then delivering it out the second hose. The treadle irrigation pump is able to lift up to seven thousand liters of water per hour using the power of the human body .By using the treadle pump; farmers are able to increase their yields, particularly in the dry season, by delivering water to fields of up to 1 hectare.
