Nature offers us resources as well as spiritual enjoyment. In the story, Santiago, as the other fishermen in Cuba, depends on fishing for a living, not only for food, but also for money. Despite of this, all the creatures are related to each other and interdependent. The ecological harmony mainly lies in the peaceful and dependent relationship between the old man and nature.Before sailing out to the sea,the old man, Santiago, saw human-beings coexisted peacefully and harmoniously with the non-human nature in his dream at night.This can be considered as a typical reflection of the old mans longing for an ecosystem in peace and harmony. 1.The Old Mans Coexistent Relationship with the Sun, the Moon and the Sea Later, when he sailed far for his fishing adventure. In the old mans eyes, the sun and the sea were his dear friends, so were the moon and stars. The sun worked as his guide, which showed him the time and the direction of sailing.During the night, the moon and stars would take over the task of guiding him.The old man takes the sea as a lovely lady. In the old mans eyes, the sea has life and even has her own personality. The old man is so considerate that he is able to understand and forgive the seas cruelty.The old man is actually affectionate towards the sea just as he is to women.
