Unit 5 Penny in the Dust

Unit 5 Penny in the Dust Ernest Buckler 1908-1984 About the Author - Ernest Buckler 19 July 1908 – 4 March 1984 About the Author Buckler was born in the village of West Dalhousie, Nova Scotia, where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. He was a scholarship student at Dalhousie University B.A., 1929 , and a philosophy student at the University of Toronto M.A., 1930 . After graduation, he stayed in Toronto, working as an actuary, until 1936, when he returned to rural Nova Scotia, eventually settling on a farm in Centrelea near Bridgetown. - In 1967, he was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal and in 1974, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. - Buckler showed a remarkable sensitivity to the landscape and human character of his native Annapolis Valley. One of his principal strengths was his lyrical and metaphorical prose style. The Abstract of the Story The story is about the losing and finding of a little penny. Peter was a highly imaginative seven-year-old boy. One day he got a new penny, bright as gold, from his kind but uncommunicative father, who couldn’t offer the boy anything until he had shown sign that the gift would be welcome. The Abstract of the Story In the boy’s eyes, the father seemed humorless and severe and distant. And the boy couldn’t ask the father to do anything for him. Then with some fantastic imagination in his mind, the little boy tried to play a game with the little penny from his father. Unfortunately, he lost it when he was playing the game. The Abstract of the Story With the father’s help, the penny was found in the dust, but the father did not give it back to Peter. Instead he put it back into his own pocket and had well kept it ever since then. After the father’s death, the penny was found again in the father’s upper vest pocket by the son, who was a grown up and who now understood why his father had done so then.
