Part VI Generalization 1. What is generalization? A general statement about a group of people, things, opinions within a culture based on a small amount of information. Often generalization is not entirely true, because there may be examples of individuals or situations wherein the generalization does not apply. The following are statements of generalization: Everyone likes a little bit of excitement and variety in their life. Every salesman lies to make more money on a sale. College is the only way a person can be properly educated. Poor people are lazy.? No one could complete a marathon without the appropriate training. 2. How is generalization important in learning about a culture? As culture is based on things that a group of people share in common, in one sense generalizations are the culture, and without generalization there would be no culture. 3. What mistakes may turn generalization into overgeneralizations? 1) Holding the generalization as a fact rather than a hypothesis. 2) Generalizing from too few instances.
