To transmit the drive from the transmission mainshaft to the final drive pinion; To have some allowance for motion between the final drive and transmission. 1) The suspension connects the final drive assembly to the car body. The final drive moves up and down in relation to the engine and transmission. A coupling is needed that permits movement between the final drive and transmission.
