Modern Automotive Safety Features Many safety features are available as standard equipment or as options. Some of these include; Side impact barriers Crumple zone in the body Seat belts Antilock brakes, including traction and stability control Air bags (supplemental inflatable restraint) Types of Restraint Systems Active systems Systems that the occupant must make a manual effort to use. Seat belts Passive systems Systems that operate automatically Air bags Seat belt tensioners Seat Belts Service Tips Pay special attention to where the webbing contacts maximum stress points. If webbing is stuck in the retractor, check for dirt or foreign material on webbing. Never bleach or dye the belt webbing. Check for proper retractor operation. Seat Belts Belt webbing defects Seat Belts Service guidelines Keep sharp edges away from buckles or latch plates. Avoid bending any portion of the buckles or latch plates. Do not attempt to repair any seat belt component. Tighten all fasteners to manufacturer’s specifications. Passive Seat Belts A passive seat belt system uses electric motors to automatically move shoulder belts across the driver and front seat passenger. The upper end of the belt is attached to a carrier that moves in a track at the top of the doorframe ant the other end is secured to an inertia lock retractor. The retractors are mounted in the centre console. Passive Seat Belts When the door is opened, the outer end of the shoulder belt moves forward to allow for easy entry or exit. When the doors are closed and the ignition turned on, the belts move rearwa
