In the spring of 1925, he had just completed his first year as science teacher and part-time football coach at the high school in the little town of Dayton. In the same year, he violated a state law by teaching the theory of evolution in a Tennessee high school. After that, the name of John Scopes became synonymous with his trial, which is popularly known as the Monkey Trial. A film, called Inherit the Wind, was made from the trial, with much of the dialogue coming directly form transcripts of the court proceedings. The main idea of the lesson In 1925, the author violated a state law by teaching the theory of evolution in the high school he taught and was prosecute for it. The trial was highly publicly confronted between defense attorney Clarence Darrow and director of the prosecution, William Jennings Bryan. Finally, Scopes was found guilty and fined a nominal sum.
