Introduction With the fast-paced development of the global politics, economy and culture, the society poses higher requirements on senior middle school students’ ability of speaking English. Oral English as a necessary tool for communicating with other countries is getting more and more important for us, especially for senior middle school students who are borned in 21st century and facing more and more challenges from the society. At present, English teaching in our country is still exam-oriented. There is still a long way to go if we want to carry out quality-oriented education and improve the students’ oral English ability. The?“New Curriculum Syllabus” set such requests to the senior middle school students’ oral English ability:? 1) One can use the correct pronunciation, intonation and rhythm to have persuasion and argument.? 2) One can express opinion, information and viewpoint; can attend discussion, carry on interview and formulate a plan in a familiar situation. 3) One can make a simple demonstration on a normal topic.? 4) One can use an appropriate way to have a talk with others and maintain the conversation in a common scene.? 5) One can understand other people’s meaning, and make an appropriate response in a suitable opportunity.? 6) One can make an appropriate affirmation or denial response to an inquire and a request. 7) One can work as a general life translation, such as going shopping with foreign guests and translating for bargaining. 1 In order to meet these requests, the senior students’ oral English ability should be paid more attention to. II. Theoretical Concerns of Oral English Ability Teaching A. Definition of Oral English Ability The spoken language is the foundation of other language activities.
