IndianDairyindustryhastheworldslargestherdwithmorethan300millionbovinesincluding192.49millioncattleand

109.85millionbuffaloes,whichproducesmorethan187milliontonnesofmilk.Indiaranksatfirstplaceamongall

countriesintermsofmilkproductionandconsumption.Indiaaccountsformorethan22%marketshareamongtheworld

and57%ofAsia’smilkproduction.IndiaproducesmilkworthINR8.5lakhcroreannually.Indiaconsumesmostofthe

dairyproductsincludingmilkandexportverysmallfractionofit.Thedairymarketconsistsofretailsalesofbutterand

spreadablefats,cheese,cream,dairy-basedandsoy-baseddesserts(paneer),drinkableyogurt,milk,soymilkandsoy

drinks,yogurt,andfromagefraisandquark.Itcontributes~4.2%intheGDPofthecountryandhasregisteredagrowth

of4.9%.GovernmentofIndiareportedthat187.7milliontonnesofmilkhadbeenproduced,andthatthepercapita

availabilityofmilkinIndiawas394gramsperday.India’smilkproductionwas195milliontonnesasof2020-21.Dairy

productscomprisenearly22%oftotalspendbyhouseholdsonfoodandnon-alcoholicbeveragesinIndia.USDA

expectedfluidmilkproductionat203.5millionmetrictons(MMT)forCY2022.Anticipatingstrongpricesandmodest

exportdemand,butterexportswillriseto15,000metrictons(MT),36percenthigherthantherevisedestimatedexport

figureof11,000metrictons(MT)forFY2021.Withthesameassumptions,skimmedmilkpowder(SMP)exportsare

forecasttoincreaseto20,000MT.In2022,Milkconsumptionisexpectedtoreach85MMT.

croreagainstthebudgetestimateof4288.
