Down syndrom is one of the most common birth defects唐氏综合症是一种最常见的出生缺陷

Case Study: Communicative Occurrences of a Child with Down syndrome and her Peers in a General Education Setting with and without an Assigned 1:1 Assistant Present Jennifer Barasch ESR 506 June 13, 2006 Introduction In terms of birth defects, Down syndrome is considered one of the most common. Children with Down syndrome usually exhibit some degree of cognitive disability. There are specific physical features associated with Down syndrome and those with the condition may have an increased susceptibility to certain medical conditions, from dry skin to heart defects (WebMD, 2005). It is estimated that one in every 800 to 1,000 newborns has Down syndrome in the United States. That is about 5000 children a year. Currently, Down syndrome affects approximately 350,000 people in the United States (WebMD, 2005). Since the 1970’s, laws have been passed to provide people with Down syndrome equal protection under the law. These include Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 [the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which has been revised every few years] and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991. Children with Down syndrome can attend school, participate in recreational, vocational, and social activities and generally join their non-disabled peers in most of life’s general pursuits in their communities. Often, children with Down syndrome may benefit from additional assistance from teachers, parents and others to be able to participate more fully in all these general life pursuits, including school. While many aspects of living with Down syndrome have been studied, from the medical implications and causes or possible preventions to adult service needs and best practices in schooling, recreation and socialization, a newer phenomenon emerging from the increasingly more common inclusive schooling practices has surfaced. How is the communication interaction of students with Down syndrome
