A Study of Tourist Publicity Materials Translation of High Context in Cross-culture Communication Chapter 1 Introduction This part mainly gives a concise introduction to the current situation and the significance of the translation of tourist publicity materials in China, expressing the purpose and theoretical foundation of the research, and outlining the general structures of this thesis 1.1 Research Background Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries has been declared by The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) (Duan Kaicheng, 2004:3). As for China, tourism develops faster than ever since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy in 1978. It is expected that China will be the world’s largest tourist destination and the fourth major source of tourism by the year 2020. Data in Report on forecast observational study on China Tourism Market tendency in 2011 （《2011 中国旅游市场趋势观察研究预测报告》2011 ）shows that, in 2009, total tourism income (reached to) 1.29 trillion yuan, an increase of 11.3%compared to that of 2008. Overall tourism industry in China in 2009 maintained a steady and rapid growth. Annual number of domestic tourists reached to 1.902 billion passengers, increasing 11.1% ; income of domestic tourism was 1.02 trillion yuan , an increase of 16.4% ; the number of inbound tourists (reached to) 126 million passengers, decreasing 2.7%; number of inbound overnight tourists (reached to) 508.80 million passengers, decreasing 4.1%; foreign exchange earnings of travel (reached to) 39.7 billion , decreasing 2.9%.
