Handbook for College Research(15) When Appropriate The information in this chapter is based on The Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition (Chicago: U of Chicago P, 2003), and Kate L. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, sixth edition (Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1996). While the chapter describes Chicago style and the sample materials illustrate Chicago notes and citations, the primary text of this chapter follws the conventions of MLA. Chapter 15 Using Chicago Style 15a Recognize the distinct documentation patterns in Chicago style. 15b Consider patterns for footnotes and endnotes. 15c Follow the appropriate note forms for books and other separately published materials. 15d Follow the appropriate note forms for periodicals. 15e Follow the appropriate note forms for audiovisual sources. 15f Follow the appropriate note forms for electronic sources. 15g When required, prepare a bibliography. 15a Recognize the distinct documentation patterns in Chicago style. Requiring footnotes (placed at the “foot” or bottom of pages) or endnotes (listed at the end of the paper), University of Chicago style provides full publication information within each notation. 15b Consider patterns for footnotes and endnotes. Format for Chicago Footnotes and Endnotes Indent the first line of each note five spaces (one “Tab”). List all authors’ names in complete from and normal order (do not invert the order within a name). When no author is named, begin the note with the source’s title. Use the complete title, no matter how long; a colon and a space separate the title from the subtitle. Separate major sections of entries (author, title, publication information, and pages) with commas. Single-space the notes themselves, but double-space between them. 15b Consider patterns for footnotes and endnotes. Positioning Footnotes and Endnotes Footnotes and endnotes both identify the sources used in a paper. Use whichever form your instructor prefers. 15b Co
