His father is a lawyer who worked in a bank. János, nicknamed “Jancsi” (Johnny), was a child prodigy(奇才) who showed an aptitude for languages, memorization, and mathematics. Although he attended school at the grade level appropriate to his age, his father hired private tutors (家庭教师) to give him advanced instruction in those areas in which he had displayed an aptitude。 He received his Ph.D.（Philosophiae Doctor） in mathematics from Pázmány Péter University in Budapest at the age of 22.
