First and foremost, I am interested in the radical approach to language in society known as critical discourse analysis, principally its epistemological and ontological foundations in critical realist philosophy and its application to the study of mediated and multimodal discourse. Secondly, I am working on the development of a (critical) media literacy pedagogy. Finally, I am actively involved in the relatively new field known as ecolinguistics which concerns the relationship between language and ecology. I am presently investigating the contribution of representations of nature in mass media texts and their potential for either perpetuating or overcoming environmental problems. Mark Weeks（文化緊張概論） Since my doctoral thesis I have been working at understanding the ways in which laughter is produced and conceptualized. More recently, this has led me to examine the function of notions of desire both in cultural theory and in cultures at large. I am particularly interested in the issue of the frontier—read both literally (as a spatial construct) and metaphorically (as an identity construct) and paradoxically seen as both a border that separates and a region where hybridization occurs. Learning how people and cultures define themselves vis-à-vis other people and cultures can help us respect and negotiate differences and improve intercultural communication.
