The criterion for search ing the optmi um param eters of the ATMD is de- fined as the m in mi ization of the variance of displacement or acceleration response of the structure w ith the ATMD. The criterion used to evaluate the effectiveness of theATMD is the ratio of them inmi um d isp lacem ent or accelera- tion variance of the structurew ith theATMD to the displacement or acceleration variance of the structurew ithout the ATMD ( referred respectively to as the d isplacement or acceleration reduction factor).
