Teaching design of At home Taken from Lesson 1, Chapter 5 Busy lives By Shi Hongwei Ⅰ.Analysis of the teaching material The topic of this lesson is At home. The teaching material introduces different living scenes and actions at home through pictures、 words、and activities. It emphasizes on the grammar the present continuous. The material pays attention to the form、meaning and use of the grammar by providing kinds of activities. Ss will learn to describe the action which is happening right now with the present continuous tense, especially what is happening at home and in his/her daily life. Considering the characteristics of vocational school students, the material also emphasizes the practical function of language, it provides activities to learn how to pay a bill and write a check, which are the real problems Ss will solve in their future life. The teaching material reflects the teaching and learning model like this: InputLearningUse(Output). Ⅱ. Analysis of the learners Ss may be familiar with the present continuous tense, for they have learned it in junior school. But most vocational school students are poor in English and some of them have lost interest in English study. So teaching design should try to stimulate their study interest, which is also a main characteristic of English textbooks for secondary vocational schools. Ss are more interested in things closely related to their lives, examples from themselves are more attractive to them. Because of their poor English base, teaching design should follow the principle of acceptable in recognition, from easy to harder. Ⅲ. Teaching aims According to the Secondary Vocational School English Syllabus’ provision, language teaching should reflect the principle of “people-oriented”. Based on the material and students’ level, the teaching aims should be the following: Knowledge objectives (1) Having this lesson, Ss will master the basic form and basic usage of the present continuous.
