One of his masterpiece, Hard Times reflects his understanding and concern about the state of society and the people after the British Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century .This Novel through depict real life vivid and portray characters detailed, to show readers the moral status of the British bourgeois society and the social picture. By analyzin-g the novel Hard Times in a two typical utilitarian Gradgrind and Bounderby,as well as other characters around them, it is concluded that the extreme utilitarianism destroys humanityand is the root cause of these characters’ tragic fates.Key word: Industrial Revolution UtilitarianismDestroy humanity Root cause of tragic fate1 IntroductionCharlesDickens was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period.
